This is a shocking experience for me. I have not expected to meet such rude doctor in Canada.
I have two bad pregnant experiences. So I have been very careful about it. I went to see doctor about three days after my regular period time. When I was told I am pregnant, I was glad and worrying at the same time. The next week I had a blood test at Dr. Shum’s office. Then I visited him twice, at the ninth week and fourteenth week (Nov. 22, 2007) respectively. Each time he talked with me less than 5 minutes. At the fifteenth week, before he left, I asked him if I should have ultrasound. He thought about it for two seconds and said yes.
After the third visit, I heard from others that at the twelfth week, there should be one blood test and one ultrasound. I felt uneasy since so far I only had one blood test. So I made appointment and went to see him again in the fifteenth week (Dec 4, 2007).
I told him what I have learned from other source. He explained that the blood test only for high risk women, like older than 35 or had miscarriage history. I told him I had miscarriage. He asked me how many times (This information should be in the file in the spring of 2007 I have talked about it with him and he even referred me to a specialist). I explained to him. He said there are ISP1 and ISP 2 and it was used to avoid … (I do not remember the item). Some people choose ISP then no needle touch the baby. Any he did not answer my question about if there are any effect that I missed the first ultrasound and the blood test. I told him about MSS which can be a compensate way for ISP. He said he dose not know about it and said “do not ask me the thing I do not know”. Then he said: ”I got go”. Just at that time his cell phone rang and he talked with somebody for about 2 minutes. Then he closed the file and stood up to leave. I took out the package for PregVit and asked him to prescribe it for me. (On Nov. 22 I asked him to prescribe it for me. He donot know what it is. I told him it is similar to Materna but need doctor’s prescription. He told me I can get all the vitamins without doctor’s prescription). I told him I have double checked with pharmacist that I need the prescription to get it. He started to seem impatient and stood there said “I donot mind to give it you that”. When he wrote the prescription he said with a very cold tone: “I donot know what are you doing. You asked your friend, internet. You make yourself confused. If you do not believe me, do not come to see me” .
I was really upset. He has a note on the wall to ask patients limit their questions to TWO each time. How can I know the thing I want to know? I told him I have the right to know all the information to protect myself and my baby. He said “NO, YOU DO NOT”. I was shocked! I told him I had miscarriages and I did not know about the blood test. He answered: “I have many patients; I can not remember all the things.” I reminded him that he should be responsible for every patient. Then I got the answer “If you think I am not responsible, then donot see me”.
I cannot believe I met such a DOCTOR! In my mind, he should have enough education to let him respect other people, not even pregnant lady. I know it is not a problem at all for him to lose one patient like me. But I have to spend a lot time to find another family doctor. That makes me more annoyed!
