2. Normally the date that your family left Canada is the date you became non-resident for tax. For your case, your wife left Canada in April 2007, so if you handed in your NR-37 and get approval from CRA about non-resident for tax, you will be noticed clearly in the CRA letter from WHICH date you are non-resident for tax. I would guess it is April 2007.
3. If you really want to save tax but do not want to cancel all bank accounts, credit cards or RRSP, etc. in canada, all you need to do is to change your address in these accounts to your USA address. So the government will take it into consideration and might still give you approval of non-resident for tax.
4. Once you change to non-resident for tax, you will not be able to claim Canada tax online, but have to do it in paper.
