When i visit China last year for business, my lawyer told me not to hand in the I-94. in order to avoid any problem, i just took the I-94 off my passport before departure, then attached that back when i flew back. No problem no questions when i past the border. I was in/out through Chicago. But my lawyer do issue a TN like letter for me and ask me to keep it with me during trip, The lawyer told me to show the letters if POE officer have questions, i also brought my degree and recent pay stub. But I did not use that at all.

But you case is different, what you have now is a TN I-729 approval form. Not the final white I-94.
First you should not hand in that at any circumstance because it is the only prove that you get the latest TN approval. you should always keep that letter as a whole for you own record.
Second When you come back from China, you will have to show this approval form to the POE officer, then they will ask you fill the white I-94 card, check that in system and attach that white I-94 card to your passport. POE officer will still return your original TN I-729 approval form back to you for your own record.

so you better ask your company lawyer issue a letter to you to confirm your employment. Also you better take all the TN application document with you, like degree, recent pay stub.更多精彩文章及讨论，请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net

                      重新发给我一个普通的I94，没有multiple字样，但是标注日期仍然与原先的I94限期相同，并没有要求我出示申请TN时的学历，公司信等文件（虽然我带了复印件以防万一），似乎是凭电脑里我身份的记录直接给了我新的I94。

                      对这一点做法上的变化，还请内行的人证实和解释。
