Bamboo to plant in backyard:

本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛Fargesia dracocephala
* Max height 10’ (Estimated West Coast Maximum Height 8 feet) * Max culm diameter 1.0" * Min. temp -26C * Sun/Shade * Clumping Bamboo *
Dracocephala Originates from the Mountains of China at elevations over 6000 feet. It forms a dense slowly spreading clump that is strongly weeping in habit. Unlike most Fargesia it is able to be in full sun without its leaves curling but it does prefer protection from the hottest afternoon sun. Being a hardy clumper that can be planted in the sun places it in a select group of clumpers. If planted on four foot centers it becomes a dense wall. The canes are almost solid and make useful stakes for gardeners.

Fargesia rufa
* Average height 9’ (Estimated West Coast Maximum Height 7 feet) * Max culm diameter .5" * Min. temp -29C * Sun or Shade * Clumping Bamboo *
Rufa is a beautiful bamboo from Sichuan Province, China, with orange-red culm sheaths that add a glow to its overall appearance. It is an extremely hardy bamboo and one of the few hardy clumpers that can handle direct sun without leaf curl. Being an early shooter with very strong clumping growth, Rufa is very easy to grow.

Fargesia murielae (Umbrella Bamboo):
* Max height 15’ (Estimated West Coast Maximum Height 12 feet) * Max culm diameter .5" * Min. temp -32C * Likes open shade * Clumping Bamboo *
Murielae is named for the graceful way that its culms arch outwards like an umbrella. Umbrella Bamboo is similar to Fargesia nitidia but with greenish yellow culms. It is a very hardy bamboo which grows at elevations above 10 000 feet in china. This bamboo grows in a clump and spreads very slowly.

Max height 16’ (Estimated West Coast Maximum Height 14 feet) * Max culm diameter .5” * Min temp -23C * Shade * Clumping Bamboo *
Denudata is a very rare form of clumping bamboo from Sichuan, China. It has tiny delicate leaves on gracefully arcing light green culms that branch out after the first year. The combination of gently arching canes and petite leaves makes this bamboo very desirable. Fargesia denudata is still quite rare. Though delicate in appearance, it is a very hardy clumping bamboo.

Fargesia nitida (Fountain Bamboo)
* Max height 12’ (Estimated West Coast Maximum Height 10 feet) * Max culm diameter .5" * Min. temp -32C * Likes open shade * Clumping Bamboo *
Fountain bamboo is similar to Fargesia murielae except it has darker culms. The culms are a dark mahogany color with a bluish white powder when young. This is a great bamboo for the lazy gardener. It is tough, beautiful and clumping. Like Murielae, Nitida flowers every 120 years or so and recently flowered so it should be another 100 or so years before it flowers again.

Pleioblastus viridistriatus
* Max height 3’ * Max culm diameter .25" * Min. temp -30C * Sun/Shade * Running Bamboo *
The new leaves in spring are golden yellow with green stripes, about 7 inches by ½ inch and densely hairy on the lower surface. The old culms can be mowed each winter making way for brilliant new growth each spring. Makes an excellent ground cover or to brighten up a shady area. Our favorite ground cover bamboo.

Thamnocalamus tessellatus (Berg Bamboo)
* Max height 16’ (Estimated West Coast Maximum Height 12 feet) * Max culm diameter .1" * Min. temp -23C * Sun/Shade * Clumping Bamboo *
Berg Bamboo is the only bamboo native to South Africa. It grows in an open clump with culms up to a foot apart. It has a more robust, shaggy look than the other mountain bamboo’s. The culms are flexible even when old and were used by African tribesmen to make frames for their shields. This Bamboo has a very original look to it. Wonderful hardy clumping bamboo which can handle full sun.

Semiarundinaria yashadake 'Kimmei'
* Max height 15’ (Estimated West Coast Maximum Height 12 feet) * Max culm diameter 1.5" * Min. temp -20C * Sun/Shade * Running Bamboo *
The colorful culms vary from yellow with a green stripe in partial sun to completely bright red with a white culm node in full sun. The leaves are large and some are striped with yellow. Very thick foliage, excellent plant for a screen also does well in a pot.

15m-30m high, taller than tree,it is too tall to plant in backyard.
      • Are you panda?
        • Fargesia rufa 'Green Panda'
      • Did you do mail order from BC Bamboo World? I checked HD, they have Fargesia rufa, I am going to buy from HD.
        • Yes, mail order. Which HD has Fargesia rufa?
          • The GardenGallary in Pickering (Brock rd, north of 401)has Fargesia murielae $24.99, Fargesia rufa $39.99
          • The HD in Ajax has Fargesia rufa $20.
      • Vancouver?
      • Photo, please.
