With the exception of rattlesnakes, the majority of Canada’s snakes are non-venomous. They are all generally non-aggressive and act out of self defense. Many will even emulate poisonous snakes through their behavior such as rustling their tail to mimic the sound of a rattle.
At Risk
Of the 24 species in Canada, 13 of them are already listed as having a risk of extinction, and of the 11 remaining, 3 have isolated populations or subspecies that are also considered at risk. Many of our snakes suffer because of loss of habitat, pesticide use, and needless killing.

Snakes are very useful to our gardens. They are predators of slugs, rats, snails, leeches and many other invertebrates. They keep the pest population under control for us, so in return, treat snakes with respect by not handling them and keeping a distance
