ASSESSING IMMEDIATE SUICIDE RISK
CONSIDER:
Lack Of Supports
• This is based on the person’s perception that they do not have resources to turn to.
• External resources (friends, counsellor, etc…).
• Internal resources (hope, faith, etc…).
• People who are unable to identify resources are at higher risk.
Prior Suicidal Behaviours
• People with a previous episode of suicidal behaviour have a 35-50 times greater risk of completing suicide than the overall population.
Suicide Plan
• People with a detailed plan are at higher, more immediate risk.
Consider the following:
• How?
• When?
• How prepared are they?
• How lethal is the plan?
• How to Help
When You Suspect Someone You Know is Suicidal. Watch for clues. There may be changes in:
• Behaviour
• Personality
• Appearance
• Sleep patterns
• Weight
Take threats seriously.
• The person is calling out for help.
Answer cries for help. Listen.
• Do not ignore the issue.
• Offer help, support, and compassion.
• Be willing to hear how bad it seems.
• Don’t deny, minimize or challenge.
• Don’t panic
Ask about suicide openly. People don’t get more suicidal by sharing their feelings. Be
direct in asking
• Are you feeling depressed?
• Are you thinking of suicide?
• How? How soon? How prepared?
Let them know you care
• Reassure them that they are not alone
• Talk to the part of them that wants to live.
• Focus on agreement to take one small step away from suicide and towards life.
Get help. There is no confidentiality
• Involve family and friends when a life is at risk.
• Offer to take them to a doctor, clinic or hospital emergency.
• Go with them. Don’t leave them alone.
• Remember that you are one of the resources but you are not alone.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net
