I am working on my spoken English as well. here are some of my experience.

To improve listening, we need to listen the same material again and again until you clear understand each sound. Because the unfamiliar sounds are the barriers which slow down your understanding.
some materials I am using:
The National - extreme standard and clear prounciation. so get familiar with standards.
The Hour(11:05pm at CBC) - George Stroumboulopoulos, highly recommend, the fatest and clearest one I ever heard.

listen to them, take off the glasses, just rely on your ears. Another benefit is they release new episode everyday, so you won't be bored.

I second LunTan on The Hour by George Stroumboulopoulos. (I gave up already on trying to pronounce his last name.) It's very informative and entertaining as well. Perfect for young audience. You can also subscribe to The Hour's podcasts, -iron(iron man); 2010-2-9 {75} (#5872717@0)
