Fire crews discovered an alleged drug lab while battling a blaze in a north Scarborough highrise Friday, July 23.
The fire broke out in a 17th floor unit at 125 Bamburgh Circle near Warden and Steeles avenues around 10:50 a.m.
A resident of the ninth floor said he heard alarms and saw thick black smoke billowing out a bedroom window when he looked up from his balcony.
"I yelled down to the firemen when they got here if we had to get out of our apartment," the resident said. "They said no at first. And then someone yelled up and said to get out, so we came downstairs."
The building was evacuated.
Toronto Fire Services District Chief Stephan Powell said there was a kitchen fire in a 17th-floor apartment. He said the blaze was contained to the unit though there was smoke in the hallway.
