The 30 days work for the travel in North America only.

i.e. if you travel to Canada, and fly to China from Canada (even less than 30 days), you need turn in your I-94 when you leave US.

If somebody from the forum gives you something different, it is his/her own experience. The border office may not be strict. But you may get trouble some day if you do not turn in your I-94.

If you leave to China, please turn in your I-94. You will get a new one when you come back. I-94 is not a visa. Canadian does not need US visa; -- the TN or TD stamp on your passport is your "visa", or the approval letter (I-797) if you renew your status by mail in the US.

Hope my explanation would be clear.

    • 1) keep ur I-94. 2) will get new I-94 when back
    • As long as you are out of US less then 30 days, you do not have to handover the I94. Before you check in, take i-94 off the passport
        • i was told less than 30 days by officer. My trip always less than 30 days, never have problem, no one even bother to ask but never tried more than 30 days
        • chinese passport TD need apply visa in china. I was fined %500 because we didn't do that last time. Canadian TN is very easy to go back. No need for application material.

      • Your TN/TD status is tied with the I-94 serial number,
if you decide hand in the I-94, then you need to keep the copy of the old I-94, when you reenter show the copy to the officer he will issues a new one for you

Also you should always keep the i-797 with you if you have it

also you should always have the full TN application documentation ready
