The latest results released by Canadian cellcos
have confirmed that subscriber growth is at its
lowest for three years, according to analysts at
Merrill Lynch. Results from the country's four
cellcos for 3Q02 recorded 260,000 net additions,
well down on analysts' expected figure of 350,000.
ML believes that non-recurring influences were
partly responsible for the weak quarter. CDMA
cellco Bell Mobility blamed a tightening on its
credit crackdown cost it up to 30,000 subscribers.
Meanwhile, the bank said it would not adjust its
subscriber growth estimates for 4Q02 of 521,000,
which are already significantly down on 4Q01
figures of 741,000.

Canadian vendor Nortel Networks is seeing severe
pricing pressure in GSM infrastructure but sees
CDMA pricing as more stable, the company
revealed at the UBS Warburg global telecoms
conference in New York this week. It estimated the
overall CDMA infrastructure market to be about
one third of the total market by 2006. Nortel is
positive on its ability to gain share in UMTS in
Europe over the existing GSM vendors, but it
expected the total UMTS market in 2003 to be
50,000 base stations or less, implying UMTS will be
